Wind rating is the whole game. A shingle rated for the Midwest is not rated for a named storm coming off the Gulf. Nailing pattern and fastener count matter as much as the material.
Ventilation has to work in humidity. An attic that cannot breathe in a Louisiana summer cooks the shingles from underneath and shortens the life of the roof by years, from the inside.
